Aesthetics

by admin on September 17th, 2008

This image is an idea of the type of aesthetics I would like to go with for the final installation. It combines the artificial and real, questioning the motives behind the message. In this image the artificial face seems more dominant, which is stating the prominence of advertising and the power their messages have over us.

The Commitment

by admin on September 12th, 2008

Using the previous example to work off, I will have the same sort of layout  along a wall setting, but instead of having people standing along side one another there will be levitating heads. Connotations to wisdom, experience etc. Idea comes from the Wizard of Oz and the great Oz’s levitating head. Believed to be something great, yet its just a man behind the curtain. So i intend to play with that idea in the installation.

As the user walks past a floating head it will start speaking, spreading its wisdom to the on lookers. The heads maybe an animation with the interviewed people projected onto the artificial surface/face.

The heads will be triggered by a camera above the wall, observing when users pass each head.

Process for Final Installation

by admin on September 12th, 2008

Feed back from stage 2 allowed me to develop my idea and hopefully resolved the installation. Knowing now that stage 2 had the qualities of 2 projects, I approached the personal issues of the project, as in this installations I’m making a statement about how media uses appeals in advertising to manipulate the user.

Continuing with the ideas of peoples views on advertising appeals, or how they think appeals manipulate them towards the product creates a personal connection with the user in the space. Developing this idea through inspiration from “Merchants of Cool” by Douglas Rushkoff, helped me understand interview methods within the realms of advertising and the techniques used to identify manipulation styles for certain age groups/target markets.

From this I developed my idea to a empty room with a tv and chair sitting in the middle with a remote on a side table. The Idea was that peoples intuition would tell them to sit down and use the remote to change the channel, where the messages of appeals would then talk to the user.

This didn’t follow all my criteria I put out for my installation so the idea was ditched. Exploring into more feed back I looked at this video on youtube.

Basing my idea on this type of layout will achieve  all of my criteria, with a few changes.
